First Snow!

Since both of my girls were born on the sub-tropic Okinawa, Japan, they had never seen snow–until this week. They did know what snow was based on their Christmas movies and Kendal was excited to come to North Dakota (AKA: The North Pole) in order to see it. Living in Okinawa for four years was worth not having winters! I was raised in Delaware and I am pretty sure the earliest snow I ever experienced was around Thanksgiving–but even that was rare. North Dakota apparently skips autumn–or at least decides that one month of it is enough. Although I appreciate the beauty of snow and God’s creation of the seasons cycle, I hate being cold. On a cold day, I am perfectly content to stay inside, curled up in a blanket with a good book and a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate). I wish I had a fireplace! Still, I am willing to drag myself outside in order to see the smiles on the girls faces.

The girls watching the snow fall. This reminds me of “The Cat In The Hat”

After a day and night of snowing.

Kendal is super-excited! Audrey is mad that the scarf is covering her face!

Kendal has a blast playing & diving in the drifts!

Audrey doesn’t know what to do!

Keenan doesn’t mind it!

I am glad that Shane likes to play with the girls in the snow so I don’t have to!

Did I mention that I miss Okinawa?!

Obamacare WILL Fund Abortion! (Video)

“Creepy quote of the week from founder of Planned Parenthood. Her (sick) dream lives on, with funding from U.S. taxpayers.” (Neil-Eternity Matters)

“Many, perhaps, will think it idle to go farther in demonstrating the immorality of large families, but since there is still an abundance of proof at hand, it may be offered for the sake of those who find difficulty in adjusting old-fashioned ideas to the facts.  The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”  Margaret Sanger,Woman and the New Race.

Obama is has been very deceptive in this important area (among others)!

Are you shocked?

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.

When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

My Thoughts For The Week:

I am still struggling with motivation. I think Kendal is too. We really have not established a steady routine with homeschooling or anything else. I’m sure that is normal for just moving and still being without most of our belongings. I am also finding it hard to do school with Kendal with Audrey in the house. The only times we get anything (other than the movies) accomplished is when Audrey is sleeping or out of the house with Shane. This week we did not work on a Bible verse. Kendal doesn’t seem to be memorizing them at all. Although I know she is capable of memorizing; I’m thinking that with everything that I am doing she may need more than just one week per verse. I need to think that through a bit.

My Project For The Week:

Remember the rainbow using tapioca finger paint?

1. I drew the outline of a rainbow on butcher paper (left over paper from unpacking our shipment).

2. I took store bought tapioca (in the individual snack cups) and mixed 2 drops of food coloring to 6 different cups.

3. I spooned one color at a time in the outline of the coordinating color spot. Kendal used her fingers to spread it around. I helped by making sure colors didn’t go into other spots. I also filled in any white areas she missed. Kendal continually ate the pudding (which was kind of the point of using tapioca!)

4. After letting the rainbow sit for a few minutes, I used my pampered chef scraper and carefully scraped off the excess tapioca. I scraped a few colors at a time which allowed them to blend slightly.

5. Then, I carefully cut out the rainbow (because it is wet it can tear easily) and hung it to dry. I recommend hanging so that air can get to both sides to dry quicker.

6. Finally, after it dried, I stapled it to the wall in our school room!

My Plans For Next Week:

Monday I am going out of town to have a dental procedure. The rest of the week will obviously depend on how I am feeling.

LETTER: D                           NUMBER: 4

BIBLE STORY(S): Daniel

The Grace Of God

This book was written by pastor and author Andy Stanley. He tells the story of God’s grace as it weaves throughout the Bible. He describes it in the beginning, at the flood, and throughout Genesis in the lives of Joseph & Judah. He continues along the thread of grace in the Old Testament with the ten commandments, Rahab, David, & Jonah. Entering the New Testament he tells the stories of several of Jesus’ disciples, the Pharisee Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Paul, the thief on the cross next to Jesus, the prodigal son, and the early church.

I have written in my Bible a quote (author unknown) that I heard when I was a young teenager: “Grace is a gift of God that we don’t deserve and mercy is the punishment that we do deserve that God takes away.”  This is very humbling. I know that I can never earn God’s grace, I can only accept it.

Stanley notes that, “Grace plus anything is anything but grace.” In other words, Grace plus works or Grace plus traditions or Grace plus ‘fill in the blank’–IS NOT GRACE! What a wonderful gift that God has offered to undeserving me and you!

I thought that this book was an easy read with thought provoking stories and illustrations of God’s grace. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to better understand the subject of grace.

Family Tree

Have you ever heard a song that totally speaks to your heart and feels like it was written just for you? This has happened several times to me (see here & here for a couple of those songs in my life). Sometimes it is a song that speaks to you for a season–when you are going through a crisis and need encouragement or when something amazing happens and you are full of joy. Other times these songs speak to your life in general and become life-songs.

I am blessed to be apart of a small accountability group of friends who discuss, encourage, pray, etc. about our issues with anger. A couple of weeks ago we were all discouraged because even though we have been working on our anger for about a year (or more) we are not seeing much progress. There are times when all of us seem to fail miserably in this area. We were also talking about our families. Each of us have a parent (or two) who had an anger problem while we were growing up. Our parents were our example. What we experienced growing up became our “normal” and that is what we mimic as adults. Most of us with anger problems will find that anger has been passed down several generations. Is that a good excuse for continuing in our anger? NO! Absolutely not! Nevertheless, after witnessing and forming bad habits for years and years, we now have to unlearn those habits and replace them with good ones (this concept could apply to other types of addiction and/or bad habits as well). Many times those of us who had some sort of dysfunction in our families feel like we are doomed to carry on that dysfunction. This, of course, is not true! In Christ we have been made new!

“…If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;

the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

We can be the one who stops the dysfunction in order to create a new legacy for our children and grandchildren! Praise God!

So, how are you going to change your family tree?

I had never heard of Matthew West until I moved back to the USA where we have Christian radio. His new CD just came out and I got it after hearing the story behind the music on the radio. He wrote songs based on personal stories of some of his fans. The whole CD (The Story Of Your Life) is really good and I HIGHLY recommend it but this song really speaks to what my accountability friends and I have been struggling with lately. It speaks to me because of other family disfunction/history also.

Family Tree

By: Matthew West

You didn’t ask for this
Nobody ever would
Caught in the middle of this dysfunction
It’s your sad reality
It’s your messed up family tree
And all your left with all these questions

Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?
Do you have to carry what they’ve handed down?

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

I have a dream for you
It’s better than where you’ve been
It’s bigger than your imagination
You’re gonna find real love
And you’re gonna hold your kids
You’ll change the course of generations

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

Cause you’re my child
You’re my chosen
You are loved
You are loved

And I will restore
All that was broken
You are loved
You are loved

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re brining new life to your family tree now
Yes you are
You are

No, this will be your legacy
This will be your destiny
Yesterday did not define you
No, this will be your legacy
This will be your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re brining new life to your family tree now

Blog Updates!

  • For those of you who have followed Ben’s Story and prayed for him:
    • (October 15, 2010): The jury found his abuser “not guilty” based on what they said was reasonable doubt. During the trial they were not told of her previous conviction. Our family is saddened by this. We still believe that Ben’s injuries were diagnosed correctly at the time of injury and that justice was not served today. Still, we trust that God sees the bigger picture and knows the reason for this outcome.
  • I have been approved by a few Christian publishing companies to be apart of their blog review programs!  In exchange for free copies of new books, I will write reviews for the books on my blog. Most of these books will probably not be ones that I would normally choose for reading but I thought it would be a great way to expand my reading & writing horizons. I plan to offer some of these books as free gifts to my blog readers! Details about that will be in the reviews for those particular books!
  • Speaking of books & blogs! I have added a new page to my Heart Treasures Boutique website:
  • For those of you who are following my homeschooling blogs:
    • Last week my mom, sister, and niece were in town so we did a review of weeks 1 & 2. They were still here the first half of this week so we really didn’t do much homeschooling at all. I will resume next week with: N, 3, Being Nice, Noah, 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • And something to think about…

Really Woolly Bible Stories

This children’s book is filled with easy to understand stories from the Bible:  Creation, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, The Ten Commandments, David and Goliath, Daniel, Jonah, Jesus’ Birth, Jesus Loves the Little Children, Jesus Feeds 5,000, the Good Smaraitan, Jesus Walks on Water, Jesus’ Death & Resurrection, & The Great Commission. The author notes the Bible references for each story for further reading. The introduction to the book includes this poem and Bible verse:

“Through these stories you will discover

That God is faithful and true,

And Jesus, the Good Shepherd,

Will always take care of you.”

“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms

and carries them close to his heart.” Isaiah 40:11

The artwork in this book is absolutely adorable–just like the the rest of the Really Woolly line! I love the simplistic way of introducing important Bible stories to children. I read the whole book to my 3 1/2 year old daughter in one sitting. It held her attention from start to finish. The book is a durable board book with a padded cover; so it is great for toddlers. The poems and rhymes are catchy and understandable for the pre-school/kindergarten age. It would make a great baby shower, birthday, holiday, or “just because” gift!

This Is A Matter Of Life And Death…

Have you heard the GOOD NEWS?

***media_player.php***

God Loves You!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17

Everyone Has Sinned!

“This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” Romans 3:22-23 & 1 John 1:8

Sin Must Be Paid For!

For the wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23

Good News! Jesus Christ Has Already Paid For Our Sins!

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

We Must Receive God’s Gift Of Salvation By Faith!

“…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord… If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness… Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 6:23, 1 John 1:9 & Romans 10:13

Praise God! God extended his grace to us when we are completely undeserving! His love and mercy toward us is worthy of my praise and devotion! Prayer and Bible reading is how I communicate with my Lord. The Bible is God’s Word–a letter of love, instruction, and a story of God’s grace throughout history.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16
