Ben was born a perfectly healthy baby. At 6 weeks old Ben was violently shaken, thrown against a wall and left for 10 hours before receiving any medical treatment. Ben spent 7 weeks in the NICU. Ben suffered a massive traumatic brain injury, skull fracture, rib fractures and bi-lateral retinal detachment which caused blindness; he was not expected to survive. After numerous surgeries, Ben is now blind, unable to speak and suffers from Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus and severe developmental delays. Ben needs special equipment, adaptive products and toys and special therapy programs to continue his progress & to help keep him safe. He continues to have surgeries as needed and he needs constant care and monitoring. I get frequent e-mails from my Aunt about the trials he constantly faces.
All of this has not stopped Ben’s strong will to live. Now, at 7 years old, Ben is a fighter and loves life. With the love and support from his adoptive parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends he struggles on.
After several years in jail, Ben’s biological Aunt (the woman who caused his injuries), was released on bond pending re-trial. The re-trial took three weeks and today the jury will begin to deliberate. Unfortunately, a lot of this case has been a political mess.
Please continue to pray for Ben and his family (my Aunt, Uncle, & cousins). Also, please pray for God’s will to happen with this trial–whatever that may be.
***UPDATE (October 15, 2010): The jury found her “not guilty” based on what they said was reasonable doubt. During the trial they were not told of her previous conviction. Our family is saddened by this. We still believe that Ben’s injuries were diagnosed correctly at the time of injury and that justice was not served today. Still, we trust that God sees the bigger picture and knows the reason for this outcome.***
“Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.” Matthew 19:13-15
