ASK ALYSA

For some reason, I attract people who have questions. Some odd questions, opinion questions, serious questions… about religion, books, movies, politics, parenting, marriage, and so many other topics. I enjoy answering questions. I enjoy researching various topics when I do not know the answers. Recently, a good friend suggested that I should write a book about all the advice that I give! While writing a published book is definitely a life goal and dream of mine, I know that it is not going to happen right now because I have so many other priorities at the moment. Still, I had a brilliant idea of answering questions on my blog!

I have no idea how my readers will respond to this idea… so I figure that as long as people send me questions, I will continue to answer them! Click “Submit Your Question” below to submit your question. If you have more than one question, please submit separate surveys for each question (feel free to submit as many as you would like)!

Disclaimer: If you send a question, there is no guarantee that I will answer it on my blog. I will choose questions that I know that I can answer well and I will post questions that I feel will be the most relevant to my readers. I may invite a guest writer to answer questions on occasion. Some questions may require research which may delay posting an answer. If I answer your question, I will only post your first name and first initial of last name. I will also send you an email with the blog link.

The Shack

In light of the new movie adaptation of The Shack, I thought I would reblog my review of the book. I have no plans to watch the movie because of how strongly I feel about the bad and misleading theology the book presents. I would consider watching it if someone asked me to give my opinion of it but I highly doubt the movie would make significant enough changes from the book to change my opinion of it. If you choose to watch the movie and/or read the book, I encourage you to do so with caution and with careful consideration and comparison to scripture. Do not let the emotional story cloud your discernment.

Heart Treasures

Here is my “review” of the book, “The Shack.” I wrote this and e-mailed it to all of my friends in August 2008 after reading “The Shack” for my church’s book club. Since the book is still making its rounds in the Christian community and since it came up in conversation in the comments section of another blog; I thought that sharing this would be relevant.

*****

I recently read a popular book called “The Shack” by William P. (Paul) Young. I am giving you my opinion of this book now because I can find a ton more positive reviews about this book than negative. Especially within the Christian community; most of the reviews/comments I have read give mostly praise and “how this book changed my life” perspectives. Personally, for a book that many people consider as Christian Fiction; I find this book to be mostly unbiblical and very…

How To Be A Noble Woman

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Girl Talk: 52 Weekly Devotions

This book by Lois Walfrid Johnson is a devotional geared towards middle school aged girls and is a part of the Faithgirlz series. It is divided into 52 sections; one section for each week of the year. Each week has a scripture memory verse, a story, 7 days of journaling prompts with blank space to write, and a prayer. The stories cover a variety of subjects that girls may encounter in middle school: embarrassing moments, mean kids, friendships, boys, modesty, choices, attitude, responsibility, etc.

I like the layout of this book and that there are daily journaling prompts for the entire year. I like that the weeks/days are not actually dated so someone could start this book any time of year. I think that this book would appeal to girls in the middle school stage of life who are wanting to build their Christian faith. The stories are relevant to this age group. Scripture memorization and journaling are encouraged. The correlation between the stories and truths found in scripture are easy to understand and apply to everyday life. My oldest daughter is 10 years old. I think some of the stories are applicable now however many of them are probably more appropriate for an older girl. I plan to keep this book and give it to her later.

In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission I am required to disclose that ZonderKids provided this book for free in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Beginner’s Bible (Updated 2016)

This book was first published by ZonderKids in 1989. It has been a favorite among households with young children. The old version has beautiful, colorful, and engaging illustrations. This updated version has the same illustrations but they have been transformed into three-dimensional art. 15541995_10211632981809220_344271054706927781_n

(Left: old version. Right: updated 2016 version.)

The stories are exactly the same in both versions. Over 90 stories divided between the old and new testaments.

15541114_10211633034330533_5872996484620486537_n

I remember my younger brother and sister receiving The Beginner’s Bible when they were toddlers. I loved reading it to them. Our family loved this book! When my first daughter was born, we received a copy of it. If it had not been given to us, I would have definitely bought it myself. The illustrations are eye-catching and perfect for younger children. The stories are easy to read for beginners.

However, I personally prefer the previous version instead of the updated version when it comes to the illustrations. In my opinion, this is a classic example of when newer is not always better. The pages in the updated version are thicker and shinny but I think that the 2D illustrations in the older version are more crisp. Here is a side by side comparison (Top: old version. Bottom: updated 2016 version.):

Whatever your illustration preferences, I definitely recommend The Beginner’s Bible for any household or church library!
