Heart Treasures Boutique

Throughout the years, I have pursued several home business opportunities. My favorite by far has been my own Heart Treasures Boutique. I enjoy crafting and my boutique gives me a creative outlet that I can share with others. When I lived in Okinawa, Japan I started doing craft fairs on the military base we were stationed at. I made a lot of Diaper Cakes, Baby Quilts, and a few other things. For a year or two, I was the go to person that people ordered Diaper Cakes from! When I lived in Minot, North Dakota, I continued to do to craft fairs. I still made Diaper Cakes but also added Hair Bows and Bow Holders. It was in North Dakota that I established my the business name of “Heart Treasures Boutique.” I already had this blog which is “Heart Treasures” and you know (if you have been following me for awhile) that “Heart Treasures” comes from the Bible verse: Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I thought that the same theme could be applicable for my business as well and a reminder that everything I do should be to please the Lord.

In the past four + years of living in New Mexico, I never really pursued my boutique business. The craft fairs that I heard of were way too expensive for me to have a table at and I could not really find an interest in the Diaper Cakes and Hair Bows like I had in other locations. I still kept all of my supplies and made gifts on occasion for people.

One thing that is popular here is vendor shops. There are several shops in town where vendors rent a small space inside a larger shop and put their inventory items in that space. This past March, my dad and niece came to visit and I took them to one of my favorite vendor shops (Main Street Crafter’s Mall) that also has an awesome sandwich shop (The Lunch Box). We were walking through the store after lunch and I came across an empty space that was available for rent. I talked to the staff and decided that day that I was going to start renting that space! It was a spur of the moment decision for sure!

My dad helped me build a shelving unit to put in the space while he was in town!

After my dad and niece left, I started working on the booth more. I loved the black but painted the trim to lighten it up a bit. I also pulled out my racks and hooks from storage and installed them in the booth.

When my new sign arrived, I was so excited!

It took me a few weeks to get inventory in place. I worked hard making bows and bow holders, sewing blankets and burp cloths (new additions to my business), and collecting items and books from around the house that have been waiting for a purpose (most of the books are brand new!). I am continually working on new items to add to the inventory. I also rearranged the booth several times before I was satisfied with the set up!

These are the latest photos I took of my booth!

I am so excited to see how this endeavor plays out. It is a dream in the future to have a store front gift shop (after we retire from the military and intend to live in the same place for longer than a few years). This is a small step towards that dream. It is nice to have everything that stays in one location! That is much easier than carting everything to and from a craft fair!

Once Upon A Time Storybook Bible

This book is illustrated by Omar Aranda and published by ZonderKids. The book is approximately 8 x 10 inches which is similar to other hardback illustrated children’s books. Comprised of 33 popular Bible stories, there are 18 stories from the Old Testament and 15 stories from the New Testament. Each story has a title, scripture verse (taken from the New International Version (NIV), vibrant illustrations, “Once Upon A Time…” paraphrased story, and a “Happily Ever After” word of wisdom and story scripture reference.

On the front cover, it states, “The Bible is not a fairy tale. Every great story happened once upon a time.” An example of a “Happily Ever After” section in the Queen Esther story states, “Esther was brave to face Haman and the king. God gave her the courage she needed to save her people. He makes all of us brave when we need to be.” In the Darkest Day story about Jesus dying on the cross it states, “Jesus gave his life to save the world. He died so that one day, you could join him in heaven. Tell him thank you for his sacrifice.” I love the colorful illustrations of this book. The stories are written simplistically for a preschool and early elementary audience. This book will definitely appeal to young children and would make a great gift!

The Beginner’s Bible (Updated 2016)

This book was first published by ZonderKids in 1989. It has been a favorite among households with young children. The old version has beautiful, colorful, and engaging illustrations. This updated version has the same illustrations but they have been transformed into three-dimensional art. 15541995_10211632981809220_344271054706927781_n

(Left: old version. Right: updated 2016 version.)

The stories are exactly the same in both versions. Over 90 stories divided between the old and new testaments.

I remember my younger brother and sister receiving The Beginner’s Bible when they were toddlers. I loved reading it to them. Our family loved this book! When my first daughter was born, we received a copy of it. If it had not been given to us, I would have definitely bought it myself. The illustrations are eye-catching and perfect for younger children. The stories are easy to read for beginners.

However, I personally prefer the previous version instead of the updated version when it comes to the illustrations. In my opinion, this is a classic example of when newer is not always better. The pages in the updated version are thicker and shinny but I think that the 2D illustrations in the older version are more crisp. Here is a side by side comparison (Top: old version. Bottom: updated 2016 version.):

Whatever your illustration preferences, I definitely recommend The Beginner’s Bible for any household or church library!

A Royal Christmas To Remember

This book by Jeanna Young & Jacqueline Johnson with pictures by Omar Aranda is another story in The Princess Parables series. The series feature five sister princesses Charity, Grace, Joy, Faith, & Hope. This story includes a lesson based on Luke 12:15-21, the parable of the Rich Young Ruler. The princesses get caught up in the materialism of Christmas. After their village was invaded by bandits, the girls realize that they had much more than they need and they decided to share their abundance with the villagers.

My girls love the Princess Parable books that they already own and this one will be no exception. The illustrations are colorful and energetic. This is a simple story that teaches the truths of scripture and will appeal to young children who like fairy tales, princesses, princes, etc.

The Berenstain Bears and the Christmas Angel

This book written and illustrated by Mike Berenstain is about the Berenstain Bear cubs playing in the snow and making a snow angel. Mama Bear comments that the snow angel could be named Gabriel. The cubs respond that they did not know that angels had names. Mama Bear explains that Gabriel was a messenger who gave the news to Mary that she would have a baby named Jesus. She goes on to talk about the angels that visited the shepherds and the angel that spoke to the Wise Men in a dream. The book references scripture about angels and the inner back cover lists other angel Bible stories and their references unrelated to the birth of Christ.

I have always loved the Berenstain Bear books and still have several of them from childhood! Mike Berenstain is the son of Stan & Jan Berenstain and has carried on the legacy of the beloved characters. When his father Stan died, Mike started helping his mother with the series. Later after his mother Jan died, Mike took over full authorship and created a Christian themed series using the same characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the Berenstain Bears. This book is a great way to introduce scripture about angels to younger children.

Pumpkin Patch Blessings

This book by Kim Washburn and illustrated by Jacqueline Fast is an autumn themed board book. It follows a boy and a girl as they discover God’s creation through their Fall activities and journey to the pumpkin patch. The rhyming story is catchy and very descriptive.

The colors of the illustrations are vibrant and fit right in with the autumn theme. The pages of the board book are flexible and good size allowing for large print wording and full page illustrations. I really like this book and it will be a good addition to my baby/toddler book library.

Hidden In My Heart

Hidden In My Heart is a New Living Translation (NLT) Scripture Memory Bible geared towards children. Towards the beginning of the Bible, there are “Ten Hide-It Helpers” to help with memorization of scripture. After that, there are fifteen pages of “Thematic Memory Verse Plans” which includes checklist boxes. At the beginning of each book of the Bible, there is a section that gives general information about that book. The information includes: Who wrote [the book]? When was it written? Why is it in the Bible? and What’s it about? Throughout the Bible there are 100 Core Verses listed in three translations: NLT, New International Version (NIV), & King James Version (KJV). These sections also include an “Explore & Apply” and a Prayer. In the back of the Bible, there is a checklist and “Dig Deeper” section for each of the 100 Core Verses. Also, throughout the Bible there are 136 Challenge Verses (also written in NLT, NIV, & KJV) along with a checklist in the back.

What makes this Bible really unique is that there is a download code for scripture memory songs for the 100 Core Verses. Before gaining access to the songs, an account must be made using email address, download code, and password. I assume this is to ensure that the code is not shared outside of the person/family/organization who owns the Bible. There is an option to download the full files of 100+ songs in either NLT, NIV, & KJV. Or each song can be downloaded individually.

This Bible has some unique qualities such as the memory verses printed in three Bible versions and the scripture memory song downloads that are available. I think that it would be a good addition to any family library. The sections that focus on scripture memory in this Bible will be helpful to anyone (child or adult) who has a goal of memorizing more verses. I personally love all of the checklists! I have listened to a few of the song downloads and they are catchy tunes that would be easy for a child to pick up. The songs would absolutely be a valuable tool for those who utilize them!

The Prince Warriors

This book by Pricilla Shirer (with Gina Detwiler) is the first in what will be a trilogy. The story starts out in our world introducing several kids. Two brothers, Xavier and Evan, are arguing and one gets in trouble while the other does not. Two friends, Levi and Brianna, watch as a boy gets bullied. The four kids get pulled into another world called Ahoratos where they are immediately faced with chaos and danger. They are given armor and instructions by their guide and left to navigate through the world. They have to trust the armor and instructions, or make their own decisions which lead to traps and more danger. Eventually they are returned back to our world and because of their experience in Ahoratos, they are able to make better decisions in every day life. The await the possibility of returning to Ahoratos for more adventures.

Although written with tween boys in mind, this book may appeal to tween girls as well being that one of the main characters is a girl. I really liked the message of the Armor of God and how it protects and guides the children. I think that my favorite part of the book is how the lessons learned in Ahoratos were immediately applied to their everyday life. I like the reminder that there is an unseen battle and enemy that we have to face equipped with Biblical truths, courage, and the tools that God gives us. Before reading the book, I read several raving positive reviews and was looking forward to reading it. However, I did not find it to be as great as everyone claimed it to be. It is okay, but I do not think that it deserves to be praised as similar to The Chronicles of Narnia (which several reviews I read mentioned) and I do not think that is anywhere near the same level of writing as C. S. Lewis. I also felt that there were far to many characters, unusual names, unusual places, scenes etc. to keep track of. Many of the names in of people, places, and things in Ahoratos are so unusual that even the kids in the story could not pronounce them correctly. As an adult, I found it somewhat difficult to follow. There is definitely action and adventure that would most likely appeal to the tween age group though. I just cannot personally jump on the excitement bandwagon but like I said before, it is an okay book with a good message.  I gave it to my 9 year old daughter to read, and she says she likes it. I think that she is having some trouble reading it because of the unusual names, etc. like I mentioned above. She also did not recognize the Christian parallels, like the Armor of God, until I pointed them out. Once I pointed out some of them, she started to figure out others on her own. She has not finished the book yet. Even though she says she likes it, I think she has lost interest in it. She only goes back to read it when I tell her to do so. Based on the observations I see with her, I think that it may need to be read and discussed with younger children. Older children may have an easier time reading and understanding it without help.
