Heart Treasures Boutique

Throughout the years, I have pursued several home business opportunities. My favorite by far has been my own Heart Treasures Boutique. I enjoy crafting and my boutique gives me a creative outlet that I can share with others. When I lived in Okinawa, Japan I started doing craft fairs on the military base we were stationed at. I made a lot of Diaper Cakes, Baby Quilts, and a few other things. For a year or two, I was the go to person that people ordered Diaper Cakes from! When I lived in Minot, North Dakota, I continued to do to craft fairs. I still made Diaper Cakes but also added Hair Bows and Bow Holders. It was in North Dakota that I established my the business name of “Heart Treasures Boutique.” I already had this blog which is “Heart Treasures” and you know (if you have been following me for awhile) that “Heart Treasures” comes from the Bible verse: Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I thought that the same theme could be applicable for my business as well and a reminder that everything I do should be to please the Lord.

In the past four + years of living in New Mexico, I never really pursued my boutique business. The craft fairs that I heard of were way too expensive for me to have a table at and I could not really find an interest in the Diaper Cakes and Hair Bows like I had in other locations. I still kept all of my supplies and made gifts on occasion for people.

One thing that is popular here is vendor shops. There are several shops in town where vendors rent a small space inside a larger shop and put their inventory items in that space. This past March, my dad and niece came to visit and I took them to one of my favorite vendor shops (Main Street Crafter’s Mall) that also has an awesome sandwich shop (The Lunch Box). We were walking through the store after lunch and I came across an empty space that was available for rent. I talked to the staff and decided that day that I was going to start renting that space! It was a spur of the moment decision for sure!

My dad helped me build a shelving unit to put in the space while he was in town!

After my dad and niece left, I started working on the booth more. I loved the black but painted the trim to lighten it up a bit. I also pulled out my racks and hooks from storage and installed them in the booth.

When my new sign arrived, I was so excited!

17155575_1371134362932728_3983924540137218070_n

It took me a few weeks to get inventory in place. I worked hard making bows and bow holders, sewing blankets and burp cloths (new additions to my business), and collecting items and books from around the house that have been waiting for a purpose (most of the books are brand new!). I am continually working on new items to add to the inventory. I also rearranged the booth several times before I was satisfied with the set up!

These are the latest photos I took of my booth!

I am so excited to see how this endeavor plays out. It is a dream in the future to have a store front gift shop (after we retire from the military and intend to live in the same place for longer than a few years). This is a small step towards that dream. It is nice to have everything that stays in one location! That is much easier than carting everything to and from a craft fair!

ASK ALYSA

For some reason, I attract people who have questions. Some odd questions, opinion questions, serious questions… about religion, books, movies, politics, parenting, marriage, and so many other topics. I enjoy answering questions. I enjoy researching various topics when I do not know the answers. Recently, a good friend suggested that I should write a book about all the advice that I give! While writing a published book is definitely a life goal and dream of mine, I know that it is not going to happen right now because I have so many other priorities at the moment. Still, I had a brilliant idea of answering questions on my blog!

I have no idea how my readers will respond to this idea… so I figure that as long as people send me questions, I will continue to answer them! Click “Submit Your Question” below to submit your question. If you have more than one question, please submit separate surveys for each question (feel free to submit as many as you would like)!

Disclaimer: If you send a question, there is no guarantee that I will answer it on my blog. I will choose questions that I know that I can answer well and I will post questions that I feel will be the most relevant to my readers. I may invite a guest writer to answer questions on occasion. Some questions may require research which may delay posting an answer. If I answer your question, I will only post your first name and first initial of last name. I will also send you an email with the blog link.

It’s a God Thing: Volume 2

This book is created by: Don Jacobson and K-LOVE. The subtitle is “When miracles happen to everyday people.” This book has 58 different stories from real people who give credit to God for the miracles that happened in their lives at these particular moments. The stories include physical recoveries or emerging unscathed from extraordinary circumstances (drowning, hit by a train, car accident, tornado), having moments of peace in the worst of circumstances (death, attack, diagnosis), and being at the right place at the right time, etc.

Overall, I liked this book but, without trying to open a can of worms, I do wonder about some of the stories and if it really was “a God thing” or someone reading too much into it. For example (not from this book), you may remember years ago when someone claimed the face of Jesus was imprinted on a grilled cheese sandwich. Was that really a God thing? Probably not. I think that the people who told the stories in this book really believe that God had a hand in their circumstances and I think that the majority of the stories really portrayed God’s intervention in the lives of these ordinary people. I would just caution readers or hearers of stories like these to make sure that what is being said lines up with scripture. We have what we need in scripture to believe in the Holy God of the universe. I absolutely believe that God can and does perform miracles today but He does not need to because He has already performed the greatest miracles of all… becoming man, becoming sin on the cross, conquering death and returning to life, all so that we might be saved and live with Him in eternity!

This book by: Nick Vujicic with Kanae Vujicic is labeled as “A Remarkable Story of True Love Conquering All.” Many people are already familiar with Nick Vujicic’s testimony of being born without limbs. He is an inspirational and motivational speaker and is not shy about sharing his life story and how God has used him. This book shares the story of how he met his wife Kanae, about the birth of their son Kiyoshi, and the ups and downs that they have faced managing life in the public’s eye. It shares Nick and Kanae’s personal perspective, insight, and advice on a number of topics. They focus on how Christ has influenced their dating, marriage, and family life.

Although I knew about Nick Vujicic’s story from news articles and you-tube videos, I have not read any of his other books. He did a good job of sharing parts of his testimony, before meeting Kanae, that I assume were written in previous books. There were still times that I felt like I didn’t know the full story. This book is absolutely a stand alone book, I just found myself interested in knowing more about his life before meeting his wife. Both Nick and Kanae write throughout the book and the transitions from one person to the other are clear. The authors write as if they are speaking directly to the reader which makes you feel like you are having a conversation with them. I felt that this book was geared toward singles or newly married couples. I do not feel like I gained any new information or applicable advice for my personal life since I have already lived the dating life, have been married for almost 13 years, and have 2 elementary age children (as well as 2 teenaged foreign exchange students). Still their story was an interesting read and definitely inspirational. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a real life love story that has overcome the odds.
