This book by: Abby Johnson is the personal story of a former Planned Parenthood director. She tells, from her perspective, how she came to work for Planned Parenthood, her beliefs and values, her personal experiences with abortion, her job responsibilities, etc. She explains both the pro-choice and pro-life perspectives when addressing personal, political, ethical issues. She describes her experience of assisting during an actual abortion for the first time and how that experience completely changed her worldview.

This book is a must read for anyone who has any interest in the abortion debate. While Abby Johnson is now clearly pro-life, she very delicately addresses the viewpoint from the pro-choice side. As someone who has had abortions, worked for the abortion industry, and now is a pro-life advocate, she is able to give a unique perspective on the subject. She now has a heart for the women and men who work in the abortion industry and her ministry involves helping those who want to leave the industry. I highly recommend this book. It gave me insight into the mind of someone who had the pro-choice perspective that I may not have otherwise considered. When I discuss abortion and my very pro-life views with people who do not agree with me, I often reference Abby Johnson’s story and recommend this book.

What If The Mother Is Going To Die?

As I scrolled down my facebook wall this morning, I came across an article about the Michigan Senate discontinuing “voluntary” abortion from their health care plan. (articles here or here). The friend who posted one of the articles also posted the following as her status:

To which I responded with the following:

Coming from a medical perspective…

1. Thank you for acknowledging that it is a baby. Many pro-choice don’t do that (unless they are pregnant with a wanted baby).

2. If the baby has already died in the womb, removing it would not be an abortion because the baby would already be dead. The definition of abortion is “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy” or “a miscarriage” (first is deliberate, second is natural). To carry a dead baby to full term would put the mother’s health at risk.

3. If the life of the mother is at risk (for instance if the mother was in a car accident or was injured in some way) the doctors treat both mother and baby in order to try to save both lives. If one life dies (whether it be mother or baby), that is unfortunate but they tried to save both but could not. They don’t deliberately kill the baby to save the mother and they don’t deliberately kill the mother to save the baby.

Also, if you are pro-life, I would encourage you to participate in the 40 Days for Life Facebook Challenge by changing your facebook profile photo to the following photo. The purpose is to send a united and loving message by using this profile picture as your own during the “40 Days For Life” (started February 13th) collectively saying that we love and support every life. There is a great status post on the group which explains the motive & thoughts behind this!

Here are a few links to blog posts I came across today.

I am overwhelmed by the number of babies that die daily. I pray that people will start to see the truth about what abortion is and what it does not only to the babies but to the women who have them. The women need healing, grace, and forgiveness. The rest of us need to open our eyes.
