Resurrection Cookies

Last year, I posted recipes for two types of Resurrection Cookies and how to teach your children the resurrection story through baking. You can read that post here. This year we are only going to make the following recipe which is the less complicated of the two types. This is a great & unique way to teach your children about the resurrection!



Large Marshmallows

Crescent Rolls (uncooked)

Sugar/Cinnamon Mixture

1. Wrap an uncooked crescent roll  around most of the marshmallow–leaving one side of the marshmallow exposed.

~~The crescent roll represents the tomb and the marshmallow shows that the tomb is not empty.

2. Roll the crescent roll/marshmallow tomb in the sugar/cinnamon mixture.

3. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake according to crescent roll directions.

~~Read the resurrection story (using a Children’s Bible or book on your child’s level).

5. As they bake; the marshmallow will melt. Remove them from the oven according to directions.

~~You will have an empty tomb!


“The Next Survivor Series” (Mother’s Day Series- 3)

I only have two kids and often feel the stressors of life that pop up with everyday busyness and tasks. I have known some mothers who have 3, 4, 5, or more kids that seem to have it “more together” than I do. I have no idea how they do it! They give me the courage and inspiration to know that I will get through the next 20 years 🙂 Even with all of the stressors; I absolutely would not trade parenting for the world. It is generally believed that men just don’t understand everything mothers do. I would agree but I know that this is not true of all men. Those of you men who are stay at home dads deserve more credit than people give you! In honor of Moms I would like to share this story that my friend sent me via e-mail (I do not know who originally wrote it). I admit that some of this is extreme (even for most moms) for a 6 week timeframe; but I have known moms who have had to handle all of this plus more in a short amount of time and SURVIVED 🙂
Six married men will be dropped on an island;
with one car and 3 kids each for six weeks.
Each kid will play two sports and take either music or dance classes.
There is no fast food.
Each man must take care of his 3 kids;
keep his assigned house clean,
correct all homework, complete science projects,
cook, do laundry, and pay a list of ‘pretend’ bills with not enough money.
In addition, each man will have to budget enough money for groceries each week.
Each man must remember the birthdays of all their friends and relatives,
and send cards out on time –no emailing.
Each man must also take each child to a doctor’s appointment
a dentist appointment and a haircut appointment.
He must make one unscheduled and inconvenient visit per child
to the Emergency Room.
He must also make cookies or cupcakes for a school function.
Each man will be responsible for decorating his own assigned house,
planting flowers outside, and keeping it presentable at all times.
The men will only have access to television;
when the kids are asleep and all chores are done.
The men must shave their legs, wear makeup daily,
adorn themselves with jewelry, wear uncomfortable yet stylish shoes,
keep fingernails polished, and eyebrows groomed.
During one of the six weeks,
the men will have to endure severe abdominal cramps,
backaches, headaches, have extreme, unexplained mood swings
but never once complain or slow down from other duties.
They must attend weekly school meetings and church,
and find time at least once to spend the afternoon
at the park or a similar setting.
They will need to read a book to the kids each night and in the morning,
feed them, dress them, brush their teeth and comb their hair by 7:30 am.
A test will be given at the end of the six weeks,
and each father will be required to know all of the following information:
each child’s birthday, height, weight, shoe size, clothes size, doctor’s name,
the child’s weight at birth, length, time of birth, and length of labor,
each child’s favorite color, middle name, favorite snack, favorite song,
favorite drink, favorite toy, biggest fear,
and what they want to be when they grow up.
The kids vote them off the island based on performance.
The last man wins only if…
he still has enough energy to be intimate with his spouse at a moment’s notice.
If the last man does win,
he can play the game over and over and over again
for the next 18-25 years,
eventually earning the right to be called:

Mommy Brain (Mother’s Day Series-2)

Mommy Brain: having a faulty memory; the tendency to completely forget important stuff; and/or having major “blond” moments. Can also be known as “Pregnancy Brain.” (This is my definition.)

I personally do not know any mom who has never suffered from this!

(If you have not; pleeeeaaaaase let me know what your secret is :))!

Let me give you a few examples:

  • About two months ago: I put ingredients in my crock pot to make Tapioca Pudding. Two hours later; I realized that I didn’t plug in the crock pot!
  • Last month: after church, I turned on my car to let the air conditioner cool it down while I buckled the girls into their car seats. After I finished; I sat in the car for several minutes looking around and in my purse for my keys. I was about to go back inside the church to look for them; when I realized they were already in the ignition!
  • Last week: I ran into a friend at the store. I was telling her something and mid-sentence I completely lost my train of thought. I still do not remember what I was going to say. (This happens frequently in my conversations with people).
  • Last night: I woke up (around 2 am) and realized that I DID NOT take Kendal to school yesterday! I completely FORGOT to take her! It did not even cross my mind at all that she was supposed to be at school. This is especially bad for three reasons: 1) The fact that it was Wednesday came up in my conversations frequently throughout the day (Kendal goes to preschool program M, W, F). 2) I had school on the brain all day because I was researching and planning out Kendal’s homeschooling program for her next school year. 3) At some point in the morning Kendal asked me if she was going to school (I told her no).

My message to all of you moms (and pregnant moms):

The stresses of life will come and sometimes make you think that you have completely lost your mind. But in the end the “I love you Mama!” and the cuddle times totally make up for it!

Those Were My Nails

Continuing on the Easter theme; I wanted to share a song that I have listened to several times over the past few weeks. In fact, it was one of the songs played during communion on Easter Sunday at our church. For me, it is very emotional and convicting. How often do we think about the things that we do which caused the need for a Savior? How often do we reflect on what Jesus actually went through before and on the cross… for us?

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:9-10

Thankfully, the story does not end at the cross! But, there are plenty of times that I need to be reminded that I needed and still need a Savior.

My Redeemer Lives!

HAPPY (belated) EASTER Everyone! Yesterday was a completely full and busy day; so I went to bed early instead of staying up to write. I hope that you all had a wonderful holy weekend! Since I shared with you the service that we had on Good Friday; I thought that today I would share Sunday’s service with you as well.

On Friday we left the darkened sanctuary with black fabric, the wooden cross, and burned out candle displayed in front of the tomb on the platform…

Sunday morning; the set up was pretty much the same (although there was sunlight coming in through the windows). The service started with someone (same guy from Friday) singing “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord”; then Pastor Brian greeted the congregation. The worship team (which I am apart of) along with the congregation sang a hymn melody of “Christ The Lord Is Risen Today” and “Crown Him”. While we sang; two of our teens came to the platform dressed in white. They laid the cross on its side in front of the candle, covered the black cloth with a white cloth, and placed several flowers on the tomb display. Finally, as we were finishing our songs, the teens simultaneously lit the candle and turned on a light inside of the tomb.

Pastor Brian then did what we call a “Children’s Chat.” All of the kids went to the platform and Pastor Brian and a man dressed as Jesus had a brief conversation about how Jesus is now alive!

After the children went back to their seats; the worship team & congregation sang “He Reigns”. Pastor Brian preached a short but powerful sermon. Following the sermon; I gave a very short testimony about how God is working in my life (I was asked ahead of time if I would do this and even though I practiced; I still teared up). Someone else gave their testimony also. Then the people who will be going to the Philippines on a short term mission trip went up to the altar so that the congregation could pray for them (they are going over spring break next week).

Finally we recited the “Apostle’s Creed”* as a congregation then sang “My Savior My God” to close the service.

Throughout the service Matthew 28 was read as well. I have included it here in story form as told by The Message Bible (in the service it was read in a different version).

Matthew 28

Risen from the Dead

1-4 After the Sabbath, as the first light of the new week dawned, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to keep vigil at the tomb. Suddenly the earth reeled and rocked under their feet as God’s angel came down from heaven, came right up to where they were standing. He rolled back the stone and then sat on it. Shafts of lightning blazed from him. His garments shimmered snow-white. The guards at the tomb were scared to death. They were so frightened, they couldn’t move.

5-6The angel spoke to the women: “There is nothing to fear here. I know you’re looking for Jesus, the One they nailed to the cross. He is not here. He was raised, just as he said. Come and look at the place where he was placed.

7“Now, get on your way quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He is risen from the dead. He is going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there.’ That’s the message.”

8-10The women, deep in wonder and full of joy, lost no time in leaving the tomb. They ran to tell the disciples. Then Jesus met them, stopping them in their tracks. “Good morning!” he said. They fell to their knees, embraced his feet, and worshiped him. Jesus said, “You’re holding on to me for dear life! Don’t be frightened like that. Go tell my brothers that they are to go to Galilee, and that I’ll meet them there.”

11-15Meanwhile, the guards had scattered, but a few of them went into the city and told the high priests everything that had happened. They called a meeting of the religious leaders and came up with a plan: They took a large sum of money and gave it to the soldiers, bribing them to say, “His disciples came in the night and stole the body while we were sleeping.” They assured them, “If the governor hears about your sleeping on duty, we will make sure you don’t get blamed.” The soldiers took the bribe and did as they were told. That story, cooked up in the Jewish High Council, is still going around.

16-17Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw him they worshiped him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally.

18-20Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”


(The goal of The Message is to engage people in the reading process and help them understand what they read. This is not a study Bible, but rather “a reading Bible.”)

Jesus Loves Me

I have experienced several Good Friday services before but not in the same way that I experienced last night’s service. It was unique in several different ways (from what I am used to for Good Friday).

First, as we walked into the church, we were asked to remove our shoes. I assume that we did this as a way to symbolize that this service was different from our services on Sunday mornings.

Next, everyone gathered for a dinner fellowship. Everything that was provided for dinner had a purpose and incorporated symbols from a traditional passover meal (remembrance of Israel’s slavery in Egypt). Here is a list of the food and what it represented:

Soup – humble

Olives – Garden of Gethsemane is an olive grove where Jesus would pray

Lemonade – the sweetness and sourness of our old life, just as the Jews life in Egypt was both sweet (they had food and relative security) and bitter (slavery)

Hummus – A mediterranean food from the place all this occurred

Horseradish – the bitterness of slavery, sin, and our old lives

Pita Bread – an unleavened (no yeast) bread like what the Jews were told to prepare before leaving Egypt.  God was to deliver them and they were to go immediately not taking time to let the bread rise.

When dinner was over; we entered a dark sanctuary with only the platform lights and several candles to light the room. All throughout the Lent season; we have had a display of a stone tomb with a path leading up to it. Last night, the platform was covered in black fabric and there was a wooden cross on the center of the platform in front of the tomb display.

We sang “Be Thou My Vision” to start the service. Then, the crucifixion story was read from the Bible. A few people took turns reading a portion of the story. When their portion was finished they would extinguish one of the candle flames. Part way through the story; we sang “In Christ Alone” and listened to the song “How Deep The Father’s Love For Us”.Our pastor asked us to take a moment to pray and reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross. He asked us to write down any sins in our lives (on a blank card that we were given) and lay it at the foot on of the cross. The story continued and ended with the crucifixion of Jesus. All of the lights & candles were out except for one which was on the center of the platform next to the wooden cross. This candle was in a glass hurricane. Someone put glass on top of the hurricane. As we listened to someone else sing “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord”; we watched the candle slowly loose its oxygen and eventually go out. After several moments of silence; we were told that we could stay and pray or leave if we wanted to.

I stayed and prayed for a little while; reflecting on what Jesus did for me. Only by the grace of God; I am spared from the death that I deserve. One day I will be able to meet Jesus in heaven because of his love and forgiveness that he extended to me.

John 19

The Thorn Crown of the King

1-3 So Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped. The soldiers, having braided a crown from thorns, set it on his head, threw a purple robe over him, and approached him with, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they greeted him with slaps in the face.

4-5Pilate went back out again and said to them, “I present him to you, but I want you to know that I do not find him guilty of any crime.” Just then Jesus came out wearing the thorn crown and purple robe.

Pilate announced, “Here he is: the Man.”

6When the high priests and police saw him, they shouted in a frenzy, “Crucify! Crucify!”

Pilate told them, “You take him. You crucify him. I find nothing wrong with him.”

7The Jews answered, “We have a law, and by that law he must die because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

8-9When Pilate heard this, he became even more scared. He went back into the palace and said to Jesus, “Where did you come from?”

Jesus gave no answer.

10Pilate said, “You won’t talk? Don’t you know that I have the authority to pardon you, and the authority to—crucify you?”

11Jesus said, “You haven’t a shred of authority over me except what has been given you from heaven. That’s why the one who betrayed me to you has committed a far greater fault.”

12At this, Pilate tried his best to pardon him, but the Jews shouted him down: “If you pardon this man, you’re no friend of Caesar’s. Anyone setting himself up as ‘king’ defies Caesar.”

13-14When Pilate heard those words, he led Jesus outside. He sat down at the judgment seat in the area designated Stone Court (in Hebrew, Gabbatha). It was the preparation day for Passover. The hour was noon. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your king.”

15They shouted back, “Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him!”

Pilate said, “I am to crucify your king?”

The high priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.”

16-19Pilate caved in to their demand. He turned him over to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

They took Jesus away. Carrying his cross, Jesus went out to the place called Skull Hill (the name in Hebrew is Golgotha), where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, Jesus in the middle. Pilate wrote a sign and had it placed on the cross. It read:

the king of the jews.

20-21Many of the Jews read the sign because the place where Jesus was crucified was right next to the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Jewish high priests objected. “Don’t write,” they said to Pilate, “‘The King of the Jews.’ Make it, ‘This man said, “I am the King of the Jews.”‘”

22Pilate said, “What I’ve written, I’ve written.”

23-24When they crucified him, the Roman soldiers took his clothes and divided them up four ways, to each soldier a fourth. But his robe was seamless, a single piece of weaving, so they said to each other, “Let’s not tear it up. Let’s throw dice to see who gets it.” This confirmed the Scripture that said, “They divided up my clothes among them and threw dice for my coat.” (The soldiers validated the Scriptures!)

24-27While the soldiers were looking after themselves, Jesus’ mother, his aunt, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the cross. Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her. He said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that moment the disciple accepted her as his own mother.

28Jesus, seeing that everything had been completed so that the Scripture record might also be complete, then said, “I’m thirsty.”

29-30A jug of sour wine was standing by. Someone put a sponge soaked with the wine on a javelin and lifted it to his mouth. After he took the wine, Jesus said, “It’s done . . . complete.” Bowing his head, he offered up his spirit.

31-34Then the Jews, since it was the day of Sabbath preparation, and so the bodies wouldn’t stay on the crosses over the Sabbath (it was a high holy day that year), petitioned Pilate that their legs be broken to speed death, and the bodies taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man crucified with Jesus, and then the other. When they got to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs. One of the soldiers stabbed him in the side with his spear. Blood and water gushed out.

35The eyewitness to these things has presented an accurate report. He saw it himself and is telling the truth so that you, also, will believe.

36-37These things that happened confirmed the Scripture, “Not a bone in his body was broken,” and the other Scripture that reads, “They will stare at the one they pierced.”

38After all this, Joseph of Arimathea (he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, because he was intimidated by the Jews) petitioned Pilate to take the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission. So Joseph came and took the body.

39-42Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, came now in broad daylight carrying a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. They took Jesus’ body and, following the Jewish burial custom, wrapped it in linen with the spices. There was a garden near the place he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been placed. So, because it was Sabbath preparation for the Jews and the tomb was convenient, they placed Jesus in it.

Teach Your Children About The Resurrection-Through Baking!

[Update: I did make both types of cookies last Easter weekend! I have posted a picture of each under each recipe listed below. Personally, I didn’t care for the taste of the Type 1 cookie and they were very fragile (they crumbled easily). Type 2 was a lot easier and much more yummy 🙂 Next year, I may try dipping the rolls into butter and brown sugar instead of the sugar/cinnamon mixture. I also think that the correlation to the resurrection was little above my daughter’s head (age 3). But, when a friend’s daughter (age 5) saw them; she was really excited about it!]


Have you ever though about how to teach your children the Resurrection Story? I have! In fact, I have been thinking about it all week. My oldest daughter is to the age where I think she will be able to understand it but I have not really known the best way of teaching it to her.

This morning I received an e-mail from my friend Amber (Thanks Amber!); which included a recipe for Resurrection Cookies! I think that this would be a perfect way to teach Kendal this year (and years to come)! In this blog, I have included two types of Resurrection Cookies along with scripture that will help you explain the Resurrection story. The first type of cookie must be started the evening before Easter and finished on Easter morning. The second type of cookie is much more simple and can be made anytime. I have never made either type; so I don’t have any pictures (but you can find pictures online). These would make great family time activities!

***To be made the Saturday evening before Easter***

Ingredients & Supplies:

1 Cup Whole Pecans

1 teaspoon Vinegar

3 Egg Whites

Pinch of Salt

1 Cup Sugar

Electric Mixer

Zipper Baggie

Wooden Spoon



1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. (This is IMPORTANT-don’t wait until you’re done with the recipe!)

2. Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break them into small pieces.

***Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read:

“Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face.” John 19:1-3

3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put vinegar into the mixing bowl.

***Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read:

“Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:28-30

4. Add egg whites to vinegar.

***Explain that the eggs represent life. Jesus gave His life in order to give us life. Read:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:10-11

5. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl.

***Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read:

“A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.” Luke 23:27

6. So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add the sugar to the bowl.

***Explain that the sweetness part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know Him and belong to Him. Read:

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

7. Beat the ingredients in the bowl with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.

***Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes and those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read:

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” John 3:1-3

8. Fold in the broken nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto a wax covered cookie sheet.

***Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read

“As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.” Matthew 27:57-60

9. Put cookie sheet in the oven, close the door, and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door.

***Explain that Jesus’s tomb was sealed. Read:

“Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.” Matthew 27:65-66

10. GO TO BED!!!

***Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read:

“I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:20-22


Open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. THE COOKIES ARE HOLLOW!!!

***Explain that on the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read:

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.” Matthew 28:1-9




Large Marshmallows

Crescent Rolls (uncooked)

Sugar/Cinnamon Mixture

1. Wrap an uncooked crescent roll  around most of the marshmallow–leaving one side of the marshmallow exposed.

***The crescent roll represents the tomb and the marshmallow shows that the tomb is not empty.

2. Roll the crescent roll/marshmallow tomb in the sugar/cinnamon mixture.

3. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake according to crescent roll directions.

***Read the resurrection story (using the verses in the above recipe).

5. As they bake; the marshmallow will melt. Remove them from the oven according to directions.

***You will have an empty tomb!


What Is Green And Has Three Leaves?

A Shamrock!

Why three leaves instead of the “lucky” four leaf clover? Clovers can have three, four, or more leaves. “Shamrock” is used only to describe the three leaf clover (although people often don’t realize that).

I think that it is  fun and exciting to celebrate holidays but, as a mother, I have been forced to consider how I feel about some holidays and traditions. I have read about the main holidays that we celebrate in the US. My husband and I have discussed them and compared traditions with our personal experiences and Christianity.

Saint Patrick’s Day is one of the holidays that has a Christian origin. I don’t claim to be all knowledgeable when it comes to history. But from what I have read; St. Patrick was actually from Britain. Before he was named “Patrick;” he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland to work as a slave. He eventually escaped captivity and returned to Britain. Later he joined a church and studied to become a priest (and taking the name Patrick). Eventually, he returned to Ireland; feeling called by God to convert the Irish from paganism to Christianity. He was successful in his task. It is said that most of Ireland was converted before his death. There is a legend that Patrick used the shamrock in order to describe the Trinity to the people of Ireland. Although Saint Patrick’s Day has become secularized; I think that it is important to teach my children where it came from (for me this applies to all holidays and traditions). Now I do that in the form of Veggie Tales; later it may be another way. At the same time; I need to understand that it is okay to have and follow traditions but, it is not okay if those traditions become the focus of what is important. Jesus reminded the Pharisees that they follow traditions to the letter but that did not make their hearts clean and pure.

Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. So, remembering that, I go back to enjoying the holiday. Today my daughter will go to school with pigtails and big green and white bows 🙂
