Once Upon A Time Storybook Bible

This book is illustrated by Omar Aranda and published by ZonderKids. The book is approximately 8 x 10 inches which is similar to other hardback illustrated children’s books. Comprised of 33 popular Bible stories, there are 18 stories from the Old Testament and 15 stories from the New Testament. Each story has a title, scripture verse (taken from the New International Version (NIV), vibrant illustrations, “Once Upon A Time…” paraphrased story, and a “Happily Ever After” word of wisdom and story scripture reference.

On the front cover, it states, “The Bible is not a fairy tale. Every great story happened once upon a time.” An example of a “Happily Ever After” section in the Queen Esther story states, “Esther was brave to face Haman and the king. God gave her the courage she needed to save her people. He makes all of us brave when we need to be.” In the Darkest Day story about Jesus dying on the cross it states, “Jesus gave his life to save the world. He died so that one day, you could join him in heaven. Tell him thank you for his sacrifice.” I love the colorful illustrations of this book. The stories are written simplistically for a preschool and early elementary audience. This book will definitely appeal to young children and would make a great gift!

When The Holy Spirit Lays Something On Your Heart…

…Listen and Obey.

Screen Shot 2017-04-13 at 11.30.42 AM

I am in the beginning stages of planning something for the women of my church. The idea came to me after several months of hearing about many friends within our church dealing with various difficult circumstances. Some are dealing with their own illnesses or that of a family member, death of a loved one, marital conflict, parenting rebellious children, keeping the home front functioning while their husband is deployed, financial struggles, sin strongholds, and several other circumstances. I know that many times women carry the burden of caring for others while often neglecting themselves. Our church is large and many of us do not know each other. I want to bring us together for a day so that we can fellowship together and build lasting friendships and support systems. I want the women of our church will feel the presence of God even while they are dealing with heartache, tragedy, complacency, or any difficulty within their lives. I want our women to feel loved by God and know that God sees us and meets us right where we are.

Like I said, this is only the beginning stage… I have met with some church leadership who will present my ideas to the church board and staff. If approved, I can plan and organize to my hearts content. Just in the past week of meetings and creating a possible outline of events, I have felt the Holy Spirit working in my heart. I found myself crying for no apparent reason this morning as I was contemplating what to write for my presentation. The burden to encourage and to pray for the women of my church has swelled up in my soul.

I write this to you as a plea for your prayers. Please pray that if it is God’s Will for my ideas to come to fruition, that everything will fall into place:

  • that the church will give their approval
  • that a date can be set
  • that finances and child care will be available so that the women can attend
  • that God will give me the words to say
  • that the event team can create a plan that honors Him

Thank you for your prayer support! I’ll keep you updated!

The Shack

In light of the new movie adaptation of The Shack, I thought I would reblog my review of the book. I have no plans to watch the movie because of how strongly I feel about the bad and misleading theology the book presents. I would consider watching it if someone asked me to give my opinion of it but I highly doubt the movie would make significant enough changes from the book to change my opinion of it. If you choose to watch the movie and/or read the book, I encourage you to do so with caution and with careful consideration and comparison to scripture. Do not let the emotional story cloud your discernment.

Heart Treasures

Here is my “review” of the book, “The Shack.” I wrote this and e-mailed it to all of my friends in August 2008 after reading “The Shack” for my church’s book club. Since the book is still making its rounds in the Christian community and since it came up in conversation in the comments section of another blog; I thought that sharing this would be relevant.

*****

I recently read a popular book called “The Shack” by William P. (Paul) Young. I am giving you my opinion of this book now because I can find a ton more positive reviews about this book than negative. Especially within the Christian community; most of the reviews/comments I have read give mostly praise and “how this book changed my life” perspectives. Personally, for a book that many people consider as Christian Fiction; I find this book to be mostly unbiblical and very…

Girl Talk: 52 Weekly Devotions

This book by Lois Walfrid Johnson is a devotional geared towards middle school aged girls and is a part of the Faithgirlz series. It is divided into 52 sections; one section for each week of the year. Each week has a scripture memory verse, a story, 7 days of journaling prompts with blank space to write, and a prayer. The stories cover a variety of subjects that girls may encounter in middle school: embarrassing moments, mean kids, friendships, boys, modesty, choices, attitude, responsibility, etc.

I like the layout of this book and that there are daily journaling prompts for the entire year. I like that the weeks/days are not actually dated so someone could start this book any time of year. I think that this book would appeal to girls in the middle school stage of life who are wanting to build their Christian faith. The stories are relevant to this age group. Scripture memorization and journaling are encouraged. The correlation between the stories and truths found in scripture are easy to understand and apply to everyday life. My oldest daughter is 10 years old. I think some of the stories are applicable now however many of them are probably more appropriate for an older girl. I plan to keep this book and give it to her later.

A Man Who Told Us The Truth

This book by Will Davis Jr. is an examination of the life of Jesus Christ and the claims he made. The book covers the Truth about Truth, God, Your Father, Evil, Love, Death & Heaven, Religion, Himself [Jesus Christ]). The author wrote this book as if it were a conversation with the reader; not only truths from scripture but also sharing personal experiences from his life. He attempts to answer questions about Jesus that a seeker may have. At the end of each chapter there are “Points For Pondering” which include questions for the reader to consider and answer.

It took awhile for me to get through this book… mainly because it is harder for me to read non-fiction. As with any non-fiction book that explores the truths of scripture, I try to read with caution. Overall, I found that this author did a good job of portraying who Jesus is and scripture accurately. The parts that I did not necessarily agree with were more matters of opinion than essential doctrine. There were several observations that the author mentions that I never had considered before. This is definitely a thought provoking book. I know of several people who would find this book interesting.

Hidden In My Heart

Hidden In My Heart is a New Living Translation (NLT) Scripture Memory Bible geared towards children. Towards the beginning of the Bible, there are “Ten Hide-It Helpers” to help with memorization of scripture. After that, there are fifteen pages of “Thematic Memory Verse Plans” which includes checklist boxes. At the beginning of each book of the Bible, there is a section that gives general information about that book. The information includes: Who wrote [the book]? When was it written? Why is it in the Bible? and What’s it about? Throughout the Bible there are 100 Core Verses listed in three translations: NLT, New International Version (NIV), & King James Version (KJV). These sections also include an “Explore & Apply” and a Prayer. In the back of the Bible, there is a checklist and “Dig Deeper” section for each of the 100 Core Verses. Also, throughout the Bible there are 136 Challenge Verses (also written in NLT, NIV, & KJV) along with a checklist in the back.

What makes this Bible really unique is that there is a download code for scripture memory songs for the 100 Core Verses. Before gaining access to the songs, an account must be made using email address, download code, and password. I assume this is to ensure that the code is not shared outside of the person/family/organization who owns the Bible. There is an option to download the full files of 100+ songs in either NLT, NIV, & KJV. Or each song can be downloaded individually.

This Bible has some unique qualities such as the memory verses printed in three Bible versions and the scripture memory song downloads that are available. I think that it would be a good addition to any family library. The sections that focus on scripture memory in this Bible will be helpful to anyone (child or adult) who has a goal of memorizing more verses. I personally love all of the checklists! I have listened to a few of the song downloads and they are catchy tunes that would be easy for a child to pick up. The songs would absolutely be a valuable tool for those who utilize them!

Risen

This book by Angela Hunt is based on the major motion picture that is currently in theaters. The original story is by Paul Aiello and screenplay by Kevin Reynolds and Paul Aiello. Roman Tribune Clavius is responsible for squelching the zealots in Jerusalem. When the body of the recently crucified Nazarene goes missing, Pilate gives Clavius the task of investigating, tracking down the radical followers, and finding the body. Rachel is a widowed Jewish woman who makes a living baking bread. After the death of her husband, she and Clavius enter a forbidden relationship. If her secret was made known, she would surely be stoned. Clavius searches for the missing body, questions possible followers, and gathers information but the questions out way the answers. When tragedy strikes in a personal manner, Clavius questions the Roman gods that he has spent his life praying to and serving. Will Clavius find the answers that he seeks? Will Rachel be able to truly love a man who is not her husband?

I was transported into this story within the first few pages. The author did an excellent job of making me feel like I was in the midst of Clavius’ investigation and Rachel’s searching. The story is mainly told from Clavius’ perspective which is unique from most post resurrection stories. He searches for the truth based on facts and learns about faith along the way. I really liked the explanations of Isaiah’s prophesies and Jewish Passover and how they relate to the Messiah. The relationship between Clavius and Rachel was outside of marriage but I felt that it was tastefully described. As both Clavius and Rachel search for the truth about Yeshua, their relationship resolves in an unexpected way that allows Rachel to show Clavius the love of Christ. This is a historical fiction so some liberties are taken with the story line. The author explains that Clavius and Rachel are fiction characters and would not have been present during some of the scenes she portrayed them in. There are other liberties that she explains at the end of the book. I did not find these liberties to be a deterrent and I felt that the gospel was explained well with an emphasis on God’s love. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes biblical historical fiction.

It is important to note that the author states at the end of the book that although Rachel’s character was created by Paul Aiello, her character did not make the cut for the movie. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, but I am glad to have read the book first so that I know Rachel’s side of the story. I have heard really good things about the movie and based on this book, I am sure that I will not be disappointed. Due to the Roman soldier violence in the movie, Plugged In review suggests that it is not suitable for younger children. You can read their detailed movie review HERE.

This book by: Callie Grant and illustrated by: Missi Jay is a board book geared towards ages 0-5 years old. It is a part of Graham Blanchard’s Learn Absorb & Praise Collection; this book is and Learn book. This book focuses on John 12:44-77 NIV Bible verses. It is filled with vibrant colors and photos of birds. There are many “Did You Know” facts about the birds featured in the photos and the facts are tied in with the scripture and how to apply it. For example, starting with verse John 12:44 “Whoever believes in me…,”

“Baby swans are born knowing to stay close to their mother. They trust she will take care of them. Your are able to know God by staying close to Him. You start by believing in Him.”

There is a place on the first page for the child to write his/her name. On the last pages, there is a message for grownups and “What do you think?” questions for your child.

I really like the simplistic design of this book. It is thought provoking but easy enough for a young child to understand. They will be attracted to the colors and beautiful photography. It will also grow with your child from baby to toddler to child stages! I would recommend this book for anyone who wishes to start instilling the truths of God’s Word at an early age.

The publishing company, GrahamBlanchard.com, has parent and teacher resources to help inspire young children to praise and have a relationship with God. There are also several other books available and a mom blog.
