Sir Rowan And The Camerian Conquest

This book by Chuck Black is about a champion swordsman who worked his way to wealth and fame through winning tournaments. Sir Rowan’s pride and arrogance was his downfall. When he lost everything, he found his true calling as a Knight of the Prince. Risking his life, he and his brother Lijah, proclaim the truth to anyone who will listen. There are several battles between good and evil and a unique story line which would engage anyone who reads it. Black uses allegory to incorporate Biblical truths and the Gospel. The Prince represents Jesus, the Knights of the Prince represent Christians, the Dark Knight (Lucius) represents Satan, the Silent Warriors represent angels, the Shadow Warriors represent demons, and the list goes on.

This is the second book that I have read by Black and I loved it! This is book 6 in the Knights of Arrethtrae series. He also has another series called the Kingdom Series. I am look forward to reading all of them! Other reviews compare Black’s books to Pilgrims Progress. I would also compare them to the Chronicles of Narnia and Frank Peretti’s books. These books could be Christian replacements for families who prefer not to read popular secular series such as Harry Potter. These are categorized as Youth/Teen Fiction but I think adults would like them too. I highly recommend this book!

CONGRATULATIONS HEATHER!!!

This devotional book is written by Beth Moore and almost 300 missionaries serving around the world. Each page is a daily devotional which includes a scripture verse, inspirational story, and prayer. Each page is dated by month and day so it can be used like a perpetual calendar of devotions. The index includes all of the devotional titles by month. The themes for each month are the following: January–God’s Character, February–God’s Word, March–Prayer, April–God’s Grace, May–Witnessing, June–Persecution, July–God Working, August–Contentment, September–God Before Me, October–Spiritual Warfare, November–Compassion, and December–Christmas Around the World.

This book is an easy read especially if you use it as a daily devotional. The stories are written by real people facing real challenges in real places. I believe that this book will give Christians a better understanding of what serving overseas is like as well as providing encouragement in the Christian faith. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good daily devotional and/or to people who have a heart for missions.

Also, the publishers provided me with a paperback book but someone recently gave me a hardback copy of this book. Since I prefer paperback, I will be sending the hardback to the winner. I only mention this because the dust jacket is slightly worn around the edges.

First Things First

This book is written by Kurt & Brenda Warner. Kurt is a well known football player that lead the Rams to a Super Bowl victory. Most recently he took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl against the Steelers (anyone playing against the Steelers has my vote!). Although I have had a favorite football team since childhood (Dallas Cowboys) I do not watch football regularly. Unless it is a Dallas game, I really don’t care about football at all. What attracted me to this book was the picture of Kurt, Brenda, & seven kids on the front cover. I was immediately interested in how a celebrity family raises that many kids. When I read that they were Christians I was even more interested!

Kurt & Brenda openly share their stories of before and after they got married and his career took off. They share of hardships and blessings they encountered relating to having a special needs child, money, the pressures of a public life, etc. They share their family rules throughout the book. They share about their charities and ministries. They share how each of their children uniquely fit into the family dynamics.

I was surprised about how easy it was to read this book. I felt like I was in the middle of a conversation during the whole book. I could feel the Warner’s emotions as they talked about their frustrations, hurts, victories, and love. They are transparent and honest when they talk about their feelings for each other, their children, and the people they help with their ministries. I love how they try to instill a servant’s heart in each of their children. Since both of them know what it is like to not have any money, they are careful to give God the glory for their current financial blessings by tithing (even multi million checks) and funding charities and ministries for communities and those less fortunate. They seem to really work together as a team in their marriage and with parenting. Overall, I think that this is an excellent book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the Warner family. More importantly, I would recommend it to anyone trying to raise multiple children. The Warner “rules” for marriage and parenting are practical and would be easy to adapt to any family of any size. I look forward to sharing some of them with my husband (since he probably won’t read the book) to see if we can incorporate them into our family.

Sir Quinlan And The Swords Of Valor

This book by Chuck Black is about two Knights of the Prince who choose opposite destinies. One chooses the comfortable life and the other chooses the life of actively fighting evil and spreading the good news. Sir Quinlan learns many valuable lessons and truths as he trains to be a knight in the unit called the Swords of Valor.

This is the first book that I have read by Black and I loved it! This is book 5 in the Knights of Arrethtrae series. He also has another series called the Kingdom Series. I am look forward to reading all of them! Other reviews compare Black’s books to Pilgrims Progress. I would also compare them to the Chronicles of Narnia and Frank Peretti’s books. A Rush Of Wings by Kristen Heitzmann is about a 24 year old girl named Noelle. Her father William is a wealthy lawyer who provides the very best for his daughter and shelters her from the outside world. Noelle suddenly starts to have flashbacks and memories that she does not understand. Gripped with fear, she runs away from her home hoping to escape whatever is causing her unknown fears. Weary from travel, she finally chooses to rent a room at a horse ranch in the mountains of Colorado.

Rick, the owner of the ranch, and his brother Morgan are complete opposites. Both of them in their own way try to break through the barriers that Noelle has built. Rick’s belief in God is completely foriegn to her and she tries to rationalize why she doesn’t want anything to do with God. Noelle’s new found freedom leads to events that trigger more memories. As she tries to piece together the meaning behind her fears, she starts to fall in love.

This book deals with a few tough topics while incorporating romance. It also follows Noelle’s journey toward God and healing from her past. I love the fact that the author used prayers and scriptures throughout the book. This was a story of God’s healing, grace, forgiveness, comfort, etc. I have to admit that there were several times where I thought the book did not move quickly enough for my taste. It seems as if the author was going for a suspense feel but it did not fully reach a suspense level. I felt that it put too much emphasis into some parts of the story and not enough in others. That being said, overall, it was a good and unique story line and I look forward to reading more of the author’s books.

The Grace Of God

This book was written by pastor and author Andy Stanley. He tells the story of God’s grace as it weaves throughout the Bible. He describes it in the beginning, at the flood, and throughout Genesis in the lives of Joseph & Judah. He continues along the thread of grace in the Old Testament with the ten commandments, Rahab, David, & Jonah. Entering the New Testament he tells the stories of several of Jesus’ disciples, the Pharisee Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Paul, the thief on the cross next to Jesus, the prodigal son, and the early church.

I have written in my Bible a quote (author unknown) that I heard when I was a young teenager: “Grace is a gift of God that we don’t deserve and mercy is the punishment that we do deserve that God takes away.”  This is very humbling. I know that I can never earn God’s grace, I can only accept it.

Stanley notes that, “Grace plus anything is anything but grace.” In other words, Grace plus works or Grace plus traditions or Grace plus ‘fill in the blank’–IS NOT GRACE! What a wonderful gift that God has offered to undeserving me and you!

I thought that this book was an easy read with thought provoking stories and illustrations of God’s grace. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to better understand the subject of grace.

Blog Updates!

  • For those of you who have followed Ben’s Story and prayed for him:
    • (October 15, 2010): The jury found his abuser “not guilty” based on what they said was reasonable doubt. During the trial they were not told of her previous conviction. Our family is saddened by this. We still believe that Ben’s injuries were diagnosed correctly at the time of injury and that justice was not served today. Still, we trust that God sees the bigger picture and knows the reason for this outcome.
  • I have been approved by a few Christian publishing companies to be apart of their blog review programs!  In exchange for free copies of new books, I will write reviews for the books on my blog. Most of these books will probably not be ones that I would normally choose for reading but I thought it would be a great way to expand my reading & writing horizons. I plan to offer some of these books as free gifts to my blog readers! Details about that will be in the reviews for those particular books!
  • Speaking of books & blogs! I have added a new page to my Heart Treasures Boutique website:
  • For those of you who are following my homeschooling blogs:
    • Last week my mom, sister, and niece were in town so we did a review of weeks 1 & 2. They were still here the first half of this week so we really didn’t do much homeschooling at all. I will resume next week with: N, 3, Being Nice, Noah, 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • And something to think about…
