This book by: Lisa Tawn Bergren and illustrated by: Laura J. Bryant is another encouraging tale of the cute polar bear family that appear in several “God Gave Us” stories. The book starts out with Papa Bear finding Little Cub up on a tree branch…

“What are you doing up here, Little Cub?” Papa Bear asked.

“Lookin’ for angels,” she said in a hushed voice. “The bunnies said they’re all around us.”

Little Cub and Papa Bear continue their casual conversation while walking over snow covered hills, swimming through icy water, playing with the penguins and other animals. Little Cub asks a series of questions about angels and his Papa Bear patiently answers.

“What do angel’s do all day?”

“Does all that worshiping’ give them those halo thingies?”

Little Cub ends the day dreaming peacefully of angels.

This book has beautiful illustrations and would be appealing to young children. You can see the connection between Papa Bear and Little Bear not only with the written conversation but also with the pictures. The questions that Little Bear asks are relevant and real questions that a child may have. Papa Bear answers them in a though provoking and sincere way. The answers were also perfectly geared toward a child’s level. I personally agree with how all of the questions were answered. I would imagine that there may be other teachings about angels within different denominations that would disagree with some of the responses. I would recommend this book for young children who are curious about angels (and/or who like polar bears).

Side Note: From a scientific perspective, polar bears and penguins do not live in the same habitat. Polar bears live in the North Pole and penguins live in Antarctica (South Pole). I personally don’t think this is an issue because a child would probably not care but I thought I would mention it just in case.
